idea for expansion: Mercenary Hall
On a walk earlier today, I was musing about how the latest big update allows people to hire themselves out to other guilds as mercenaries - it's a step up from a hench, for sure. Then I thought, maybe that could be formally incorporated into the game?
Not sure how it would work, but it seems to me that offering oneself up as a mercenary would have a two-fold benefit: if you're a pvp newb, you can offer yourself up for free or very little cash, in exchange for the experience of working with organized teams. If you're a pvp master, you could charge high rates for your services, and use it as a way of farming faction and/or cash.
Ideally, I think it would have both an objective and subjective method of qualifying people. Rank would suffice for objective - the higher someone's rank, the more they could justify charging. But I also think it would be very nice having an ebay or amazon-style "review" system, so that people who had hired this person could provide feedback. Even if it were just ranking them from 1 to 5 in various attributes (ie skill, cooperativeness, attitude), that would be useful in allowing people to hire the friendly newb over the jerk pro, if thats where their inclinations lead.
In my head, it's an interface accessible from the guild hall/tombs lobby, but I don't see why it wouldn't work for PvE too. You'd visit the hall, get a list of mercenaries who were online and available, the builds they could play, browse a statement they wrote about themselves as well as view their various rankings, and then extend an offer to have them join you.
I know in my guild, we often have 6 or 7 players online who want to GvG, and grudgingly we take a hench along. This would be far preferable. Given the sort of people we are, we'd probably tend to take along people who were friendly and cooperative rather than hard-core, but I can see other guilds hiring seasoned pros to give them a greater edge.
What do you guys think? viable? feasible? desirable?
